From our conversation

“Sustainable supply chains still are not promoting women to senior management or board levels. So we really need to look at how we can support women in leadership roles and better human rights support for women.”

Biography

Dr. Safia Minney, MBE, is an award-winning social entrepreneur and founder of People Tree, the pioneering sustainable fashion company featured in The True Cost movie, as well as the author of nine books including Regenerative Fashion. In 2022, Safia founded Fashion Declares, a grassroots movement of fashion professionals demanding urgent climate, ecological and social action—and most recently she has started 100% handcrafted brand indilisi. Safia shares her work and thinking on how we transition to a post-growth fashion and textile model that slows down fashion and supports restoration of our natural systems, small-scale farming and artisanal communities to promote livelihoods and support to women in the global south.

Visit the Fashion Declares website to learn more about how the organization is redesigning the fashion industry.

Interview

Rethinking Fashion for a Post-Growth Economy: Safia Minney, MBE
In this conversation, Safia presents a vision for addressing the global climate, ecological and social crises that the fashion industry currently faces. She calls for more female leadership in fashion’s supply chains, emphasizing that women do most of the work in factories yet lack representation in senior management. Reflecting on craft in the climate crisis, Safia highlights the role it can play in fostering a post-growth economy that reduces emissions, challenges mass production and supports livelihoods.
